Raja Haq Nawaz elected SCBA president

By Mohammad Kamran

ISLAMABAD: In a dramatic development, Raja Haq Nawaz, a Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Presidential candidate, has officially been declared victorious against rival candidate Munir A Malik who had been celebrating his victory since the bar elections on October 31,2006.

Justice (r) Malik Muhammad Qayyum, the returning officer of the election, announced the official results of the SCBA polls here on Saturday in which Raja Haq Nawaz secured 605 votes while Munir A Malik received 576 votes. A third candidate, Chaudhry Muhammad Jamil, also managed to secure 75 votes. However, newly elected secretary Syed Zulfiqar Ali Bokhari, vice president from Punjab Sahibzada Anwer Hameed and some executive members belonging to the Munir A Malik panel have rejected the results and accused returning officer Malik Qayyum of manipulating them. These panellists held a meeting and passed a resolution condemning the intervention of outgoing SCBA President Malik Qayyum to make the candidate of his own choice win.

According to unofficial results, Munir A Malik won the election with a small margin of 4 votes after primary counts. Malik secured 595 votes while Haq Nawaz secured 591. However, a few disputed votes overturned Malik’s victory and Haq Nawaz was consequently declared successful. Newly elected SCBA Secretary Syed Zulfiqar Ali Bokhari, when contacted by Daily Times, rejected the results and accused the returning officer of manipulation.
